First Lady Michelle Obama launched "Let's Move", which is a widespread and ambitious initiative that has the goal of solving the obesity epidemic within the current generation of children.

Surgeon General's Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation

On January 28, 2010, the U.S. Surgeon General released "The Surgeon General's Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation". The report is easy to read, and includes a number of good recommendations on nutrition and physical activity, including recommendations for school wellness policies, improving access to fruits and vegetables, reducing junk food marketing to children, and supporting walking and biking infrastructure. Safe Routes to Schools

The National Center for Safe Routes to School recently released a report on Safe Routes to School (SRTS) travel data. This provides a summary of school travel data, including parent surveys, that local SRTS programs throughout the United States collected from April 2007 to May 2009. Download the full report.

Healthy Schools Campaign, an independent not-for-profit organization, is the leading authority on healthy school environments and a voice for people who care about our environment, our children, and education. Their mission is to advocate for policies and practices that allow all students, teachers and staff to learn and work in a healthy school environment.

National Policy & Legal Analysis Network to Prevent Childhood Obesity (NPLAN)

NPLAN provides leaders in the childhood obesity prevention field with focused legal research, model policies, fact sheets, toolkits, training and technical assistance to explain legal issues related to public health. I have been serving on behalf of PTA as a member of their Schools Learning Group over the last year and have been consistently impressed with their work.

USDA Food Atlas

The US Department of Agriculture has created the first-ever Food Atlas, an interactive database that maps components of healthy food environments down to the local level across the country.

Fed Up With School Lunch

This is a blog written by an anonymous teacher in Illinois who is documenting a year of eating the lunch at her school. She has also started to incorporate guest bloggers, and many of these are equally valuable and interesting.
