Membership Resources

Today, PTA’s role is more important than ever in providing a collaborative space for parents and schools to work together to improve the learning environment for our children. All family members, students, school staff, and community members are welcome to join PTA to show that they believe in family engagement, value having a support system for their school’s volunteers, and support collective action to improve public education funding.

By joining together -as one PTA family- our collective voice has increased state funding for Virginia’s schools, helped to ensure schools are staffed to meet student needs, improved access to mental health resources, improved the quality of school meals, and helped dedicate funding to renovate aging schools. Learn more about PTA’s positive impact and work to #TakeAction4Kids.

We value the impact of local school level engagement and want to make joining PTA as easy as possible for our families! So, when individuals join your local school PTA, they pay a membership dues price that is voted on by your school community which includes National PTA dues of $3.25/member and Virginia PTA dues of $1.50/member.

At the start of the 2025-2026 school year, National PTA’s membership dues will increase from $2.25/member to $3.25/member as approved in June 2024. This means the dues you remit to Virginia PTA will change from $3.75/member to $4.75/member.  This is the first National PTA membership dues increase in 13 years, and will help meet the costs of inflation, expand access to grants, and ensure PTA continues to provide nationally recognized family engagement resources, and event toolkits for your members and school community. Virginia PTA last raised dues in 2015 by 50 cents, and has no plans to raise state membership dues. Virginia PTA is committed to keeping dues as low as possible while still providing the services you rely on including robust non-profit leadership guidance, training, personalized support, volunteer and student recognition programs, and strong state advocacy.

Membership Milestones

Membership Milestones celebrate the hard work and impact of your local PTA. Virginia PTA recognizes local units who have reached notable membership milestones in terms of total membership, student membership, and staff membership. We also celebrate units based in their increase in membership compared to the prior year. See this year’s Membership Milestones.

Submitting Membership Lists and State Dues

Due on the first of every month (per Virginia PTA Bylaws)

Submitting your membership lists and state dues on time is part of the Standards of Affiliation and keeps your unit in Good Standing. This means you will receive a renewal letter indicating that your tax-exempt status remains valid (which is often necessary to show for discounts, sponsorships, etc.). Good Standing also allows your PTA to qualify for grants and awards and enables your families to participate in the Reflections Arts Contest. Failure to submit membership lists and state dues will result in your unit being closed and its tax-exempt status revoked.

Please review these instructions for submitting your membership lists and state dues every month.
