Resolutions & Positions

Resolutions, Position Statements & Policy Letters

Resolutions, and Position Statements share research across the PTA community and guide the development of Legislative Priorities, statements on education policy, and coalition participation.

PTA is dedicated to bringing positive change to our communities in a way that is nonpartisan, nonsectarian and noncommercial. As advocates, we help raise awareness about issues that impact our communities and speak with local, state and federal lawmakers about education policies, legislation, and budgets.

Your local PTA can take a General Membership vote to ratify or adopt a Virginia PTA or National PTA Resolution or Position to guide statements or letters to your local school board or elected officials. If your community is experiencing a unique circumstance you may like to refer to our guidance on writing a resolution to develop a Resolution or Position Statement that documents the concerns of your community and the desired actions you urge elected officials to take. Please remember, that any Resolutions or Positions written and adopted by your PTA can not conflict with resolutions, positions, legislative priorities, policy letters or values of Virginia PTA or National PTA.

Resolutions

Virginia PTA Resolutions are a tool that we use to share our research with each other and formally communicate a researched action, opinion or needed solution to address a concern which affects children and youth statewide. Resolutions can come from local units or council PTAs and are adopted at the Virginia PTA Annual Meeting by General Membership.

Position Statements

Virginia PTA Position Statements are adopted by the Virginia PTA Board of Directors and are official documents based on our mission, research and/or previous resolutions or positions of either Virginia PTA or National PTA. Position Statements outline the opinion, will, or intent of the association to address a current statewide situation or concern that affects children and youth and which requires statewide or national attention and action to address.

Legislative Priorities

Virginia PTA Legislative Priorities are adopted annually by the Virginia PTA Board of Directors based on existing resolutions and/or position statements to highlight areas where legislative action is needed in the upcoming General Assembly Session to to address statewide concerns that affect children and youth. Resolutions adopted at Virginia PTA Annual Meetings are automatically legislative priorities for the General Assembly session following their approval.

Coalition Statements

Virginia PTA collaborates with other associations to amplify work on our positions, resolutions, state legislative priorities and mission. This periodically results in join statements to advance shared priorities.

Letters on Public Policy

Virginia PTA periodically issues formal letters to elected officials or government agencies; signs-on to coalition letters; or provides formal comment to support and advance our positions, resolutions, state legislative priorities and mission. Virginia PTA may join with National PTA, other state PTAs as well as other education, civic and advocacy associations who have a shared mission to amplify our collective message to elected officials or administration.
